IIT-Roorkee Researchers Make Breakthrough In Cancer Therapy By Developing Fluorescent Carbon Nanodots

Researchers from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, have successfully developed fluorescent carbon nanodots that have the potential to serve as “theranostic” (therapeutic and diagnostic) agents for cancer, Economic Times has reported.
P Gopinath the team lead said that, “Such events of real-time image-guided anticancer therapy by a single system open a new paradigm in the field of anticancer therapy.”
The process of identifying cancer cells and the methods through which they can be inhibited have always stood like a challenge in the field of oncology and cancer drug research for many decades. However, in the past few years, nanotechnology has emerged as one of the most promising options in cancer diagnostics, treatment and nanomaterials.
The team of IIT Roorkee researchers led by P Gopinath have successfully developed nanosized carbon materials which have been extracted from the leaves of the rosy periwinkle plant. This project has been supported by the Science and Engineering Research Board and Department of Biotechnology.
