Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar has acknowledged that there are 35 per cent vacant teaching posts in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other higher education institutes.

Speaking at a round table discussion on ‘Opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education and Research in India’ held in Gandhinagar, the minister also laid out three main reasons for India's 'brain drain' problem.

Them being, absence of finding scholarships, adequate supervisors and research lab/ facilities. He added that the government is addressing all the issues.

Furthermore, he said that Rs 30,000 crore have been designated for establishment and upgradation of research labs across India as reported by Times of India.

Javadekar emphasised that the main focus should be on innovation rather than fervently adhering to the laid out norms.
