Condemning 'derogatory' comments made by Sanjay Raut against the doctors, the Indian Medical Association's (IMA) Thane chapter has asked for his resignation as Rajya Sabha MP and also urged Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray to take 'necessary' action against him.

The IMF's Thane chapter demanded Raut’s resignation following his off-the-cuff remark to a Marathi news channel on Sunday (16 August) that “compounders are better … I always take medicines from a compounder…”, reports Hindustan Times.

In a letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray, the IMA Thane chapter said that amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the healthcare workers are working at great risk not only to themselves personally but also risking their dependents.

"At this critical time, we would look up to the government and the politicians to stand with these frontline workers," the IMA Thane chapter said in the letter, ANI reported.

"We are aghast that a senior senior politician like Shri Sanjay Raut ji would say that “compounders know more than doctors”. We condemn this behaviour and ask for his resignation," it said.

The IMA further said that the doctors cannot work efficiently and sincerely with such "negative and derogatory comments".

"All the doctors are demoralized and look up to you [CM Uddhav Thackeray] to take necessary action," the lMA said.
