The Uttarakhand chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sent a Rs 1,000 crore defamation notice to Yoga guru Baba Ramdev over his remarks dissing modern allopathy.

The IMA Uttarakhand in its notice has asked Baba Ramdev to post a video countering his statements on allopathy and tender a written apology within 15 days. The association had further warned that If the Yoga guru fails to do the above mentioned, then a sum of Rs 1,000 crore will be demanded from him.

Earlier on Monday (24 May), the IMA Uttarakhand had written to State Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat against the remarks made by the Yoga guru against the allopathic medical profession "hoping for a prompt and strict action" against him.

The organisation cited a video circulating on social media in which, it claimed, Baba Ramdev can be seen dissing the modern allopathic medicine system, saying that allopathy is a "stupid science" and medicines such as remdesivir, faviflu, and other drugs approved by the Drugs Controller General of India have failed to treat Covid-19 patients, reports India Today.

It should be noted that Baba Ramdev withdrew his statement on allopathic medicine after receiving a letter from Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan who called Yoga guru's remarks "inappropriate".

"We do not oppose modern medical science and allopathy. We believe that allopathy has shown immense progress in surgery. My statement has been quoted as part of a WhatsApp message that I was reading during a meeting of volunteers. I am sorry if it has hurt anyone's sentiment," wrote Ramdev in his letter to the Union health minister in Hindi, reports Times of India.
