International Monetary Fund (IMF)'s chief economist Gita Gopinath has lauded India's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and said that the nation's vaccine policy "really stands out", reports Economic Times.
Saying that India is at the forefront in the fight against the pandemic, Gopinath hailed the nation for playing a very important role in helping the world during the crisis by manufacturing and shipping critical doses of the vaccines to several nations.
Gopinath also acknowledged the contributions of the Pune based Serum Institute of India (SII), saying it produces the most number of vaccines in the world in a regular year and has been manufacturing the COVID-19 vaccine doses that are delivered to COVAX and then distributed to countries around the world.
Gopinath made the assertions when she was asked a question about India in an interactive session during the Inaugural Dr Hansa Mehta Lecture which was organised on the occasion of International Women's Day.
The lecture was organised virtually by India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations and The United Nations Academic Impact in the memory of Dr Mehta who was a pioneering Indian reformer and educator.
