In Just 30 Months Since Launch, Jio Overtakes Airtel To Become India’s Second Largest Telecom Firm

In just nearly 30 months since its launch, Reliance Jio has overtaken Airtel to emerge as the second largest telecom firm in the country, second only to Vodafone Idea in subscriber count, reports Times Of India (TOI).
Owned by India’s richest man Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani, Jio now has an impressive subscriber count of 30.6 crores. Third-placed Airtel has 28.4 crore subscribers.
India’s largest telecom company Vodafone Idea had last announced in December 2018 that it had 38.7 crore subscribers. However, analysts note that Jio could soon overpower Vodafone Idea too.
“Vodafone-Idea is the most vulnerable of the three private players in the market, and it may just be a matter of few more quarters, may be three-four, before it is overtaken by Jio,” said an analyst.
“The remarkable growth of Jio has been unprecedented and the company is expected to dominate the customer acquisition space through aggressive and innovative tariff plans, including bundling of content packages,” said Mohan Shukla, CEO of FinXPros, a consultancy firm.

While Reliance Jio (RJio) crossed the 300 million subscribers mark in just two-and-a-half years of operations, Sunil Mittal-led Bharti Airtel took more than 19 years to breach the 300 million subscribers mark.
