India Gets Its First Indigenously Developed Microprocessor Thanks To Researchers At IIT Madras

Researchers have designed and booted up India's first indigenously developed microprocessor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), Business Line has reported .
The microprocessor can be used in mobile computing devices, embedded low power wireless systems and networking systems. The project is funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India.
The microprocessor is said to be on par with international standards and will reduce the need for their import in communications and defence sectors in future.
It has been developed under the project 'Shakti'. It was manufactured at the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) of the Indian Space Research Organisations (ISRO). An open-source High-Level Synthesis (HLS) language named ‘Bluespec’ has been used for development of these microprocessors. This makes it possible to develop specific end-user solutions.
The first batch of 300 chips, known as RISECREEK was produced under Project Shakti in July 2018, with the fabrication being done in Intel’s Oregon facility in the US. The fabrication of the current chips have been done in India.
