India Has Launched The Largest Solar Power Plant In The World, Big Enough To Power 150,000 Homes

India has launched the world’s largest solar power plant following the completion of its new facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Built in just eight months, the solar power plant is spread over an area of 2,500-acre. The plant has been developed by Adani Green Energy and consists of 3.80 lakh foundations, 25 lakh solar modules, 27,000 mt of structure, 576 inverters, 154 transformers along with 6,000-km cables.
The plant, which is connected with a 400-kilovolt sub-station, has the capacity of generating over 648-megawatts of clean, green energy at a single location. Built at a cost of $679 million, the plant has helped in raising India’s total installed capacity to the 10 GW mark. The plant has overtaken the Topaz Farm in California, USA, which has a capacity of 550 MW.
As a part of government’s plan to produce 40 per cent of the required energy through non-fossil fuels by 2030, over 60 million rural and urban houses in the country will be powered using solar energy. This plant at Kamuthi has the capacity to generate electricity sufficient for about 150,000 homes.
As solar power increases, India is expected to become the world's third-biggest solar market next year, only behind China and the US.
