India Is Now A Net Exporter Of Power – For The Very First Time
India has become a net exporter of electricity for the first time.
Crippling power cuts have been a regular feature in India for as long as we can remember. To combat this problem, the government has been investing in power generation infrastructure in the last few years. This is starting to pay off.
India has become a net exporter of electricity for the first time, reported Reuters, citing the power ministry. Among the possible factors responsible for the boost in power generation include new transmission lines with Bangladesh and Myanmar and a surge in the local supply of raw materials like coal.
India’s power export from April to February, at 5,798 million units, surpassed its import from Bhutan by 4 per cent, said the Reuters report. Bhutan has been a steady power exporter to India since the 1980s. Upcoming transmission lines across the border with Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar are only set to increase sales.
