On Saturday (8 December), BJP president Amit Shah said that the citizens of India have the rightful access to the country’s resources and that the nation cannot become a Dharamshala for illegal immigrants to come in as they like and settle down.

He added that the main way to resolve the issue is via the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Hindustan Times quoted Amit Shah as saying, “NRC should not be seen by connecting it with the BJP only. It is a way to solve the country’s basic problems. How is it possible that anyone can come and settle down here? The country cannot run like this.”

He added that that only Indian citizens have a right to stay here and utilise its resources. The nation is not a Dharamshala for anyone to come and settle down, he said.

Furthermore, he said that for far too long, illegal immigrants have been used as a vote bank by many political parties since the last seven decades.

Speaking to the media, he also said that the illegal immigrants should be identified and their names deleted from the voting list. Calling them a security threat he asserted that the BJP wants them deported.
