India Overtakes Japan To Become Nation With Fifth-Largest Hydropower Capacity In The world

In a major development, India has surpassed Japan to become the nation with the fifth-largest hydropower production capacity in the world, reports Economic Times.
The data was revealed by the London-based global hydropower trade body, International Hydropower Association (IHA), who has just published the 2020 Hydropower Status Report and Covid-19 Policy Paper.
As per the available data, the total total installed base capacity in India now stands at over 50 Gigawatt (GW), which is just behind Canada, US, Brazil and China.
With a total of 15.6 GW increase in installed hydropower capacity in 2019, the total world wide capacity has reached 1,308 GW. This represents a rise of 1.2 per cent, hich is below the estimated 2.0 per cent growth rate required for the world to meet Paris Agreement carbon reduction targets. Moreover, the increase in smaller in comparison to the added capacity of 21.8 GW in 2018.
IHA also said hydropower’s flexibility services have been in high demand during the Covid-19 crisis, while plant operations have been less affected due to the degree of automation in modern facilities.
