In a serious development, India yesterday (10 April) recorded more than 1.5 lakh fresh COVID-19 cases, the highest figure since the onset of the pandemic last year, reports Times of India.
The nation yesterday recorded a total of 1,52,545 fresh COVID-19 cases, up five per cent from the day before's tally of 1.45 lakh cases. With this, India has become the second country after the United States (US) to register more than 1.5 lakh new cases in a single day.
It should be noted that the nation crossed the 1.5 lakh count just six days after it had crossed the lakh daily cases, marking a rise of 50 per cent in less than a week.
Meanwhile, Saturday also saw the nationwide tally of daily COVID-19 deaths rise by a count of 839, the highest daily toll since 16 October of last year. It should be noted that the toll continues to be lower than the case-fatality rates observed during the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in the nation last year.
Other than this, Saturday saw India's tally of active cases cross 1.1 million mark, with the daily addition of 60,000 cases for the fourth day in a row.
