Indian Navy Goes Elite; Inducts Rescue Vessel Very Few Nations Can Boast Of
Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (@spokespersonNavy)
In an initiative to emerge as a centre of excellence for Submarine Rescue Services, the Indian Navy has inducted a Submarine Rescue System with a Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) along with the required equipment. The new system has the capability of rescuing personnel from a distressed submarine (DISSUB) up to an incredible depth of 650 meters and is the latest in terms of technological advancements and increasing capabilities, reports The Financial Express.
The vessel has been designed by M/s James Fishes Defence, UK and is uniquely engineered to meet the requirements of the Indian Navy’s submarines. The Navy has ordered two systems, which shall operate both on cost and will increase operational abilities, apart from providing redundancy and early response to accidents involving submarines.
The DSRV has a side scan sonar for locating the position of the submarine in distress while providing relief by posting Emergency Life Support Containers with the help of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and later, rescuing the crew of the submarine using the DSRV.
Procuring this technology has put India among a select group of nations which hold this unique capability and puts the navy in a position to not only conduct rescue operations for only Indian submarines but also those of other nations in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and beyond.
The Navy is likely to induct the DSRV by the end of this year.
