The Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy has hired the services of the multipurpose vessel MV Triton Liberty from M/s Triton Maritime Pvt Ltd for providing logistics support to the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands, reports Business Standard.

The hire is reportedly for sorties across Kerala and Mahe, support to naval harbour operations and other miscellaneous support functions for one year from mid-March.

Commodore Deepak Kumar, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of the command, and Chetan Parekh, Director, Triton Maritime Pvt Ltd, signed the contract on Friday (15 March). The hiring was done through an online open tendering process.

According to the report, the hire would substantially enhance the support to Naval detachments on the Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands wherein a fixed schedule for the turnaround of personnel from naval patrols can be pursued, addressing the long-felt need of staff posted on these islands.

This would be particularly beneficial during monsoon months when passenger ships’ schedules get severely reduced, as also during peak traffic seasons such as school holidays.

The vessel, with an advanced fire-fighting system, can also be employed for humanitarian and disaster relief (HADR) operations at sea. Integration of the vessel would relieve the naval ships from logistics support duties for role-specific operations.
