Indian Railways Aims To Become First 100 Per Cent ‘Green Rail’ In 10 Years, Complete Electrification Of Tracks By 2022

The Narendra Modi government is working on making the Indian Railways the world’s first Green Railways within the next decade, Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said, reports the Times of India.
Goyal, on Friday (28 July) shared the roadmap to start the shift to clean energy sources with the Rajya Sabha, in which the government is focusing on electrification of tracks, moving to biodiesel, setting solar energy plants on unutilised lands and buildings into a major energy source in the coming years.
Further, the minister reiterates before the members of the upper house that the railways have been declining diesel cost inputs by electrifying tracks on a large scale. “By 2022, we are going to do full electrification of railways,” junior minister Angadi Channabasappa said.
While replying to Congress MP Jairam Ramesh claim of “grand announcements”, Goyal said that unless you aim for big goals, you will not be able to achieve big targets. “Probably 10 years from now, we can make Indian Railways the world’s first 100 per cent Green Rail,” Goyal said.
