Following a political controversy over allegations of migrants having to pay for tickets on special trains bound for their home town, the Indian Railways has clarified that it is bearing 85 per cent of the train’s running cost and that no tickets are being sold to migrant workers, ANI has reported.

As per Railway Ministry sources quoted by the report, the state governments have been asked to pay standard fares for the train travel, which comes out to only 15 per cent of the total cost.

A Press Trust of India report quotes the BJP as claiming that the Indian Railways has subsidised 85 per cent of the ticketing fare on these trains and that the state government has to be bear the rest of the cost.

This development comes after Congress president Sonia Gandhi launched an attack on the central government by alleging that migrant workers were being charged for the train travel.
