In a positive development, the cumulative freight revenue of the Indian Railways in the ongoing financial year (FY) has surpassed the figure recorded in the same period in the previous FY, reports Times of India.

Notably, the feat has been achieved despite a lockdown spanning multiple months and several other restrictions continuing to hamper full-fledged economic activity across various sectors.

While the figure in the same period in FY19-20 stood at Rs 97,342 crore, the freight revenue in the ongoing FY20-21 has surpassed Rs 98,068 crore. The Indian Railways has exuded confidence that the freight revenue for the full financial year will also be higher than that of FY19-20 level.

The Ministry of Railway has attributed the turnaround to a host of new initiatives taken by the Indian Railways to improve business development, incentives, speed and customisation. It should be noted that in February so far, the freight revenue has increased by Rs 206 crore as compared to the same period last in FY.

Furthermore, it should also be noted that even though this is the first time post lockdown the freight revenue has surpassed the levels from the previous FY, the freight loading figures have been trending higher than the corresponding months in the preceding FY since August 2020 onwards.
