In a major boost to the nation’s fight against the novel coronavirus, Piyush Goyal led Indian railways has started offering its train services to e-commerce companies for movement of goods and other essential commodities, reports Financial Express.

As per reports, Indian railways will provide local industries, e-commerce companies, any interested groups, organisations, individuals and prospective loaders etc. on-demand parcel train services in a bid to ensure unhindered supply of essential commodities through the country.

The Railways ministry said in a statement, “Zonal Railways are reaching out to prospective clients through various modes of communication including advertisements.”


It should be noted that the passenger services of the Indian Railways have been halted in the wake of nation-wide lockdown in the country. However, the freight services are being carried on as usual.

These freight carriers are currently meeting the needs of bulk transportation of essential goods like foodgrains, edible oil, salt, sugar, coal, cement, milk, vegetables & fruits etc.

The special parcel trains will be utilised to transport various items that need to be delivered in comparatively smaller quantities. So far, the national transporter has loaded 30 special parcel trains to various destinations all over the nation
