In a major push to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's campaign against single-use plastic, the Indian Railways has decided to serve tea, lassi and other such food items in earthenware across 400 major railway stations in the country, reports Asian News International (ANI).

For the hassle-less procurement of earthenware and terracotta products like kulhads, glasses and plates, Indian Railways has joined hands with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), which is running various programmes like 'Kumhaar Sashaktikaran Yojana' to boost employment and earning opportunities for the potters across the nation.

In a letter issued on 9 September, the Indian Railways has directed all Principal Chief Commercial Managers (PCCMs) of different Zonal Railways and IRCTC' CMD "to further proliferate the use of locally-produced environment-savvy terracotta products for serving catering items" to passengers through all static catering units with "immediate effect".

The Railways directed the PCCMs to identify 25 railway stations on their zonal railways respectively for implementation of the scheme.

PM Modi, during his Independence day address to the nation, had urged the people to give-up the use of single-use plastic by 2 October, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
