India is set to get its first AI supercomputer with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) collaborating with NVIDIA to set up the machine at the Centre of Excellence at Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CEERI) in New Delhi, Analytics India has reported.

The centre will house NVIDIA DGX-1 supercomputers, delivering 5 AI petaflops of computing power. Vishal Dhupar, NVIDIA South Asia Managing Director, also posted a tweet about the collaboration.

The machine, India’s first industrial AI supercomputer, will be setup at the CEERI-NVIDIA Centre of Excellence (CNCoE).

"This CNCoE is significant because it brings together Nvidia's cutting-edge AI platform with vast industrial scientific research expertise and capability from CSIR-CEERI," Dhupar said.

CSIR-CEERI Director, Shantanu Chaudhury also welcomed the development.

"The industry can use this facility to develop AI-based products supporting the Make in India initiative of the government. This CNCoE has the potential to usher in a culture of AI based innovations in a variety of application domains," Chaudhury said.

The centre can be leveraged for research across sectors like healthcare, natural resource management, food production, security and transportation among others, Chaudhury added.
