Covid-19 testing

In a significant development, the national capacity for daily testing of COVID-19 samples has surged to three lakh samples a day even as the nation is already testing around 1.5 lakh samples a day, reports Times of India.

The surge in capacity comes with the addition of more laboratories, both in the public and private sector which have been permitted to conduct testing of possible COVID-19 samples. The total number of such laboratories now stands at 907, of which 659 are being run by the various Governments while the rest are being run by private players.

One of the worst affected by the pandemic in the country, Delhi too is set to further expand testing from the present capacity of 17,000 samples a day. The city has a total of 42 laboratories and now to further enhance the coverage, each of the 11 districts of the capital city has now been assigned laboratories for testing of samples and detection of positive cases without any delay.

The development comes after the intervention by Union Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah who has so far held multiple meetings with ministers, officials and authorities at both Union and Delhi Government level to contain the situation in the city.
