Instances Of Bribery In India Fell By 10 Per Cent In 2018, But Problem Remains Pervasive: Transparency International

A survey conducted by Transparency International India in association with LocalCircles has discovered that instances of bribery in India fell by 10 per cent in 2018 compared to the year before, reports The Economic Times.
The survey is based on data collected from 20 states; participants from Gujarat, West Bengal, Haryana, Kerala, Goa and Odisha reported less cases of having to pay bribes, while the rate was higher in states like Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Jharkhand.
Out of the 1,90,000 respondents who took part in the study, 51 per cent said they had to pay a bribe in the previous 12 months, while 16 per cent of people said they never have to pay bribes to officials.
Although corruption remains a major problem for the country, the reduction in number of instances has meant that India’s rank in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) has now improved by three places to 78. The total number of countries covered under the survey is 180.
