The new Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian is set to visit India in the coming days in a bid to the intensity and further coordination and to share views to enhance cooperation in the Afghan theatre following the return of the Taliban forces to the helm of affairs in Afghanistan following a gap of two decades, reports Economic Times.

The development gains significance as both India and Iran have huge stakes in Afghanistan. Just last week, the new Iranian President Ebrahim Raise had also called for elections to be held in Afghanistan. Iran has also lashed out at Pakistan over the support provided to the Taliban against the National Resistance Front bin the Panjshir Valley.

It should be noted that earlier this month, Abdollahian had held his first-ever telephonic conversation with Union Minister of External Affairs Dr S Jaishankar. The two had then taken up discussions on the situation in Afghanistan and also the Chabahar port project. The two sides had then decided to continue consultations on Afghanistan.

It should be noted that following the return of the Taliban, Iran had also provided airspace to the Indian military aircraft for carrying out the evacuation of Indian nationals in Afghanistan.
