Starting today, booking train tickets online is set to get costlier as Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has restored the service charges which it had abrogated three years ago in a bid to encourage online booking of tickets, reports Livemint.

A service charge of Rs 15 will be applicable on booking of non-AC class tickets, while a charge of Rs 30 will be applicable for tickets of AC class. Exacerbating the development further, Goods and Services Tax on will also be applied separately.

As per a letter from the Railway Board dated 30 August, IRCTC's decision had been examined by the competent authority and that IRCTC had made a detailed case before implementing the step.

The decision has also found backing from the Ministry of Finance which has contended that the waiving off of service charges on online booking of tickets was a temporary move and that the Ministry of Railways has the prerogative to reimpose the service charges.

It should be noted that earlier the service charges imposed on booking of non-AC class tickets were Rs 20, while the figure for AC class tickets stood at Rs 40.
