Saying that the newly-made amendments to the Citizenship laws did not affect Indian Muslims, Actor-turned politician Rajinikanth on Wednesday (5 February) backed the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).
As per a News 18 report, the Tamil superstar said if the CAA posed any threat to Muslims, he would be the first person to stand up for them.
“The Citizenship Amendment Act will not affect any citizen of our country. If it affects Muslims, then I will be the first person to stand up for them. NPR is a necessity to find out about the outsiders. It has been clarified that NRC has not been formulated yet,” Rajinikanth said.
Calling the support of various religious leaders to the protests “very wrong”, he also alleged that several political parties and groups were provoking people against the Law for their own interests.
This is the first time that Rajinikanth has spoken on the matter as the country continues to witness several protests ever since the bill was passed in the parliament last year in December.
The legendary actor also supported the National Population Register exercise, saying that the drive was “very, very essential”. The Congress-led UPA government had done the exercise in the past, he remembered.
