Following a three year gap, jallikattu events are being held across Tamil Nadu during this week. While the world famous Alanganallur venue is gearing up for holding the event later this week, the other well known venue at Avaniapuram will see action today.
Agency reports say that adequate safety measures are being taken with 15 medical teams and 20 ambulances being deployed. As for the bulls, a number of safety and welfare measures are being implemented:
- at-least 20 minutes rest before the bulls are released into the arena
- animals with any sort of injury will not be allowed into the arena.
- bulls may not be caught by their horns or tails.
The Tamil Nadu assembly unanimously passed the Jallikattu Bill on 23 January, which annulled the Supreme Court’s earlier ban on the bull taming sport.
