Jan Dhan Deposits Cross Rs 1 Lakh Crore Mark As Number Of Zero Balance Accounts Falls

The total deposit in the bank accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) have crossed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark. According to the latest data by the Ministry of Finance, the total balance in the more than 36.06 crore Jan Dhan accounts was Rs 100,495.94 crore as on 3 July, reports Times of India.
According to the report, the deposits in the accounts of the beneficiaries of the PMJDY scheme was Rs 99,649.84 crore on 6 June and Rs 99,233.71 crore in the week before. The scheme was launched in August 2014 with an aim to provide access to banking facilities to the common masses of the country.
Under the PMJDY, customers are provided with Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts with additional feature of RuPay debit card and overdraft limit of Rs 10,000, which was earlier set at Rs 5,000.
Recently, the finance ministry had told the Rajya Sabha that the number of zero balance accounts under PMJDY have fallen from 5.10 crore in March 2018 to 5.07 crore in March 2019.
