Manikarnika, a Bollywood movie based on freedom fighter Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi, with Kangana Ranaut in the lead role, had a terrific first weekend with the film grossing over Rs 42 crore, reports Deccan Herald.
The movie earned Rs 8.75 crore on Friday (25 January), Rs 18.10 crore on Saturday (26 January), and Rs 15.70 crore on Sunday (27 January) in the domestic market, taking the total collections of the movie to Rs 42.55 crore.
Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi narrates the story of the great Indian freedom fighter Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, who fought against the East India Company and the British rule to prevent her kingdom from being annexed, reports Times of India.
The period drama is performing extremely well despite stiff competition from other movies like Uri: The Surgical Strike and Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Thackeray.
The movie, which is co-directed by Kangana and Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi, opened to good reviews and has impressed the audience. Kangana got widespread critical acclamation for her performance in the movie.
Ankita Lokhande, who is known for various roles in television sops, also marks her debut in Bollywood through this movie. She plays the role of Jhalkaribai, a fierce woman warrior and close confidant of Rani Lakshmibai.
