Village defence committees (VDCs) have been reactivated by the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in order to combat the militancy threat in the Reasi district of the union territory.

These VDCs are reportedly highly committed towards self and community defence against terrorists and have also safeguarded the remote hilly regions in Jammu against militancy over the years.

Reasi district police chief Shailendra Singh has also prepared a comprehensive week-long plan of action for practice fire for nearly 6000 VDC members over there.

The Senior Superintendent of Police mentioned that the activity is essential for individuals who haven’t checked and fired their weapons since a long time.

“VDC being a force multiplier is considered as the first response to thwart any nefarious designs of anti-national elements in remote areas,” Singh was quoted in a report by the Economic Times.

Accordingly, a centre at Talwara will train the VDC members belonging to Katra and Reasi whereas the participants from the Arnas police sub-division will undergo their drilling at the Rud Khad area.

Similarly, those VDC members who hail from Chassana and Mahore will be practicing at the concerned centre in Sildhar Mahore.
