The 9 February 2016 incident in JNU where anti-national slogans were allegedly raised by students of the university had made headlines. This had resulted in rustication of Umar Khalid and brought JNUSU president to the limelight in national media. A fine of 10,000 had been slapped on Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with the incident by a JNU panel. The five member JNU panel had also imposed monetary fines on 13 other students.
The students had moved to Delhi High Court regarding the matter. The court had asked the institution to place the matter before an appellate authority to review the panel's decision. The appellate authority has upheld the panel's decision, Deccan Herald has reported. The report added that the fine on some of the students has been reduced.
Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, who participated in the event against Afzal Guru's hanging were arrested on sedition charges. The duo are out on bail.
