The cyber cell of Delhi Police has busted 24 people who posed as Microsoft tech support staff and duped several US citizens, Business Line has reported. The operation carried out earlier this month would not have been possible without the help of the real-time monitoring of cyber crimes by Microsoft's Digital Crime Unit (DCU) in Redmond, USA.

The DCU uses Cloud, Big Data, Machine Learning (ML) and Business Intelligence (BI). It is used to improve the security of the products and services, protect vulnerable populations, fight malware, and reduce digital risks.

Ten companies running illegal call centres throughout New Delhi targeting Microsoft users have all been busted by the cyber cell of the police in New Delhi with the help of real-time data analytics and sharing of critical inputs.

Director (Shared Services) of Digital Crimes Unit, Shilpa Bratt told IANS, "It was real-time monitoring that helped us crack the Delhi gang behind the large-scale tech support fraud. The whole operation has been encouraging in our fight against cyber crimes.”

The cybercriminals used to impersonate Microsoft tech staff after they had managed to pop up messages on Microsoft user’s screens informing them their systems were affected by malware. They used this opportunity to charge any sum between $100 and $500 from the victims.

The Delhi Police has seized evidence in the form of cheques from customers in the name of Microsoft Tech support, call recordings, virtual diallers, Microsoft Tech support training material, call log transcripts detailing the conversation with victims of fraud, payment gateway records and servers.
