Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee who was once caught shoplifting in Singapore has now become a prominent face of an anti-citizenship amendment act (CAA) campaign in Bengal.

As reported by Press Trust of India, Mukherjee along with other members of the Bengali entertainment industry including Dhritiman Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Konkona Sen Sharma, Nandana Sen, Suman Mukhopadhyay and Rupam Islam have come out and opposed CAA, NRC.

As part of the protest, they release a video titled, “Kagoj Amra Dekhabona (we won’t show our papers)”, in a bid to assert that they will not present their identification documents if the government asks them to prove their citizenship.

After the campaign was publicised, many on social media recalled the controversial past of Swastika Mukherjee wherein she was caught shoplifting gold earrings in Singapore.

As per the above report, in 2014 when Mukherjee was touring Singapore as part of a Bengali film festival, she was caught on camera sneaking in two gold earrings in her handbag at a jewellery store inside an upscale Singapore mall.

This act was caught by security personnel who then detained the actress on charges of attempting to steal the earrings worth over Rs 12,000.

The actress though denied the charges and claimed that she had actually purchased the jewellery but failed to furnish any receipt. She then began claiming that she accidentally placed the earrings in her purse.

The shop-owners though asked the actress to either pay for the jewellery or return it back and stopped short of filing a formal complaint. Singapore has very strict laws against shoplifting and carries a jail term of up to 10 years.
