Flooding in Hampi (@WH_Dispatches/Twitter)
Historic monuments at the World Heritage Site of Hampi have been flooded as over 2.5 lakh cusecs of water was released from the Tungabhadra reservoir in Koppal district. The Tungabhadra river received heavy water inflows due to heavy rains and flood situation in the state, The Hindu has reported.
Iconic buildings like the Purandara Mantapa and Chola Mantapa are submerged in water while heavy flooding has ravaged the Rama Lakshmana Temple, Eduru Basavanna Temple, Kampli Fort, Anjaneyaswamy Temple and Salu Mantapa.
Authorities fear that the flooding would also impact the Virupaksha Temple if the reservoir outflow increases in the coming days.
This flooding has made Virupapur island inaccessible resulting in 200 tourists getting stranded.
Power supply to the heritage buildings have been cut as a precaution and records, precious materials have been shifted to the Jain Mantap which has managed to evade the flooding till now.
As per Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, losses due to floods in 17 districts could reach 40,000 crore. The state government has sought an immediate flood relief of Rs 3,000 crore from the Centre.
