Karnataka Floods: 19-Year-Old Boxer Swims 2.5 Kms In 45 Minutes To Join Belagavi Team, Wins Silver In State Championship

A boxer from Karnataka’s Mannur village had swam 2.5 km in flood water to catch a train on 7 August so he would be able to join the Belagavi district team. The 19-year-old boy, Nishan Manohar Kadam has now won silver medal in the state-level championship in Bengaluru, reports India Today.
The Karnataka floods has claimed over 40 lives, and a total of 14 people have been reported missing, according to the official data. Rise in the water level of many rivers of the state due to the heavy monsoon rains has forced the authorities to evacuate as many as 5.81 lakh people, of which 3.45 lakh people are from Belagavi district alone.
Kadam and his family were also affected by the floods. The class 12 student, who had been eyeing the boxing event when a massive flood in his village submerged and damaged the roads in his village. However, Kadam and his father did not give up. They swam for 2.5 kms in 45 minutes in head-high flood waters to join his team.
Over the weekend, the Nishan performance won him silver medal in the light flyweight category. “I was waiting for this event and didn't want to miss it at any cost,” said Kadam. The determined boxer adds: “This time I lost gold because of my bad luck. Next year, I will surely win gold.”
