Karnataka government has started the process of introducing the economically weaker section (EWS) quota in medical (MBBS) and dental (BDS) colleges. To implement this initiative 700 additional seats will be needed to meet the requirement reports Times Of India.

The EWS quota was not included by the Karnataka government in this year’s academic session purportedly due to time constraint.

Dr P G Girish, director, medical education, government of Karnataka said, “We’ve written to the Medical Council of India and the health ministry seeking permission to introduce the EWS quota in the state. We hope we get the approval soon.’’

The EWS quota can only be availed by candidates with an annual family income of less than Rs 8 lakh and would be fulfilled by adding additional seats to the institutes.
