The Indian Medical Association’s Kerala chapter has criticised the state government's decision to sell alcohol on doctor’s prescription to patients having withdrawal symptoms stating that it is not a scientific one, reports Asian News International.
"Scientific treatment should be given to those who have alcohol withdrawal symptoms. It can be treated at home or in hospitals with medicines. It is not scientifically acceptable to offer alcohol to such people instead," ANI quoted IMA as saying as per report.
The state chapter of IMA further stated that they will take up the matter with Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
With suicide cases being reported from various parts of the state after liquor sales were stopped in Kerala following the nation-wide lockdown ,Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's had announced that his government is making arrangements for regulated distribution of liquor for those suffering from alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
On Sunday (Mar 29), Vijayan has directed the Excise Department to provide liquor to those with a prescription from a doctor. The decision has raised serious ethical questions among members of the medical community.
