As clashes erupted between Communists and Islamists in Tanur of Malappuram district in Kerala on Thursday (24 October) night, a Muslim League worker was hacked to death, reports Organiser.

Deceased victim, 36-years-old M Ishaq was returning from a local mosque after offering his prayers when he was chased by alleged Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI-M) hoodlums and attacked. Ishaq was thereafter taken to a hospital where he succumbed to the virulent injuries.

The Muslim League has since raised its demand for probe against a senior leader of the CPI-M, P Jayarajan in the murder. It should be noted here that Jayarajan is an accused in several murder cases. Raising the demand for a murder probe against him, the Muslim League has now called for a shutdown in Malappuram.

The violence was an outcome of the unending turf war between the regional heavyweight CPI-M and the Muslim League which is the second-largest partner of the Indian National Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
