The Kerala High Court has slapped a man with Rs 50,000 in fines for filing a petition seeking home delivery of liquor during the coronavirus pandemic, Live Law has reported.

In the petition the Kerala man had said that large crowds at liquor shops have made it unsafe for him to purchase booze due to the outbreak of coronavirus. He thus sought that a directive be given to the Beverages Corporation to start home delivery of liquor.

The Kerala High Court bench though was not amused by the petition and came down heavily on the petitioner and dismissed the plea with the “contempt it deserved”.

“One cannot help but lament at the selfishness of the petitioner in the instant case, and others like him in Society, whose obsession with perceived "rights" blinds them to the obligatory 'duty' that they owe to their fellow citizens”, ruled the judge.

While the petitioner attempted to withdraw the petition, the judge went on to impose exemplary costs for filing the frivolous petition.
