The Home Ministry (MHA) has asked the Mamata Banerjee led West Bengal government to take action against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar for violating service rules, Indian Express has reported.

This comes after Banerjee went on a ‘Save the Constitution’ dharna after the CBI reached Kumar’s Kolkata residence over the Saradha Chit Fund scam.

The Home Ministry sent a communication to the West Bengal Chief Secretary on Tuesday (5 February) wherein Kumar’s act of sitting on the Dharna alongside Banerjee was considered a contravention of All India Service (AIS) rules 3(1), 5(1) and 7.

“In view of the above, the West Bengal government has been requested by MHA to initiate action against the officer and intimate the action taken in this regard”, said the communication.

The MHA also added that Kumar had exhibited “indisciplined behaviour” and service rule violations. MHA is the cadre controlling authority of IPS officers.

The communication added that every service member should maintain absolute integrity and do nothing unbecoming of their stature.

Kumar’s special investigative team (SIT) had been accused of shielding guilty companies and of having a prevalent nexus between the accused companies and the police.

CBI has claimed that this SIT had protected companies like Saradha Group, Rose Valley and Tower Group which had allegedly made large contributions to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The central investigation agency has thus submitted before the court that there is a lot of incriminating material against senior police officials and politicians.
