In the backdrop of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitaraman said that the country would face a setback of fifty years if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not re-elected, reports Hindustan Times.

“If we are laid back, we will lose the momentum for having a strong government and would face a setback of 50 years at least,” Sitaraman was quoted saying.

Lauding the current government, she said, “In the history of any nation, it’s not very often that you get a leadership like what you have got now.”

She said that what differentiated Modi’s tenure from previous governments’ is that it saw no corruption.

“Last five years have been of hard working. The Prime Minister without a day’s break is working and all of us from our ministries being pulled up and inspired. The difference between the current and the previous government is that there was not a whisper of corruption under Modi ji’s tenure,” she said.

About the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, she said, “2019 elections to the Lok Sabha is not just any other election, we really cannot take it lightly. ”

Sitharaman also said that the allegations made by the opposition were not factually correct and they could stoop to any level to make accusations on the NDA government.

“Between 2014 and today vis-a-vis 2004 and 2013, except for Kashmir, had there been any minor bomb attack anywhere in the country? The opposition's allegations are not based on facts, and they could stoop to any level to make allegations.”

Sitaraman also took a jibe at Congress President Rahul Gandhi over the Rafale deal, saying that during the ten years of UPA regime, not even a single aircraft was added to the Air Force.

“On 19 September your first Rafale is coming into this country,” said Sitharaman.
