Legendary playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam passed away today afternoon at 1.04 PM at a Chennai hospital. He was 74. The news of his passing was announced by his son S P Charan.

Balasubramanyam was admitted to MGM Healthcare on 5 August after testing positive for Covid-19. He had initially responded to the treatment and had tested negative for Covid-19 on 7 September. He though continued to remain on ventilator and ECMO.

His condition had worsened in the last 48 hours and he was placed on maximum life support. The hospital in a release yesterday (24 September) had termed his health as "extremely critical".

Balasubrahmanyam worked in the film industry for the past five decades. He has rendered more than 40,000 songs till now.

Born as Sripathi Panditaradhyula Balasubrahmanyam in a Telugu family, the singer received the National Film Award six times, and also holds a Guinness World Record for recording the maximum number of songs. He is also a recipient of other civilian honours — Padmashri and Padma Bhushan — from government of India.

In Bollywood, he shot to fame with his songs in "Ek Duuje Ke Liye". In the nineties, he was popular as Salman Khan's voice, having belted out several hits in films such as "Maine Pyar Kiya", Humn Aapke Hain Koun..!", Hum Saath-Saath Hain", and "Patthar Ke Phool", among many others.
