Lifelong CPM voters in West Bengal are now turning to the BJP for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, The Print has reported.

As per the report, the loyal communists contend that it is only the BJP which can stop the juggernaut of Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool. The communist supporters add that the CPM does not have either the leaders or the capacity to take on Trinamool.

“Why should I waste my vote on them? I might not agree with the BJP’s philosophy completely but they are a strong party, and the only one who can challenge the TMC”, a voter was quoted as saying.

Other leftists acknowledge that their preferred party is fast losing ground in the state and can’t pose a challenge to any party.

As per the report, hoards of grassroots leaders belonging to the CPM have left the party leaving it in total disarray. What did’t help matters is the fact that the state’s communist leadership has little credibility in the eyes of the people.

Some of these new BJP supporters though have not ruled out going back to the CPM if it ever manages to emerge as a strong contender in Bengal politics in the future.
