US-China wars
Several of the United States (US)'s global and iconic companies and business groups have come out lobbying against the US Congress' move to bring a bill which would ban the import of goods made by forced labour in China's Xinjiang region into the US, reports Economic Times.
Based on lobbying records, the companies are said to have been spending vast sums of money to weaken the legislation which would prohibit broad categories of certain goods made by persecuted Muslim minorities who have been suppressed and oppressed by the coercive Chinese Communist Party (CCP) regime led by the incumbent President Xi Jinping.
The bill comes as a move by the US to crackdown on human rights abuses. It has gained bipartisan support from both, the Republicans and the Democrats. It has already passed the House in bygone September with a massive margin of 406-3 and is likely to be passed by Senate as well. Thereafter, it could be signed into law by the incumbent Trump administration or the incoming Biden administration.
Called the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, the bill is being opposed by major companies like Nike, Coca-Cola and Apple Inc. It should also be noted that as per a report issued in March this year, the Congressional-Executive Commission on China had listed Nike, Coca-Cola, Adidas, Calvin Klein, Campbell Soup Company, Costco, H&M, Patagonia Tommy Hilfiger and several others as companies suspected of ties with forced labour in Xinjiang.
