At least six people were killed and more than 30 wounded when terrorists drove a van at high speed into Saturday night revellers on London Bridge before going on a stabbing spree on the street and in nearby restaurants and bars.

Metropolitan Police said three attackers drove a vehicle into pedestrians on London Bridge and then stabbed people in Borough Market.

Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed the attack “is being treated as a potential act of terrorism” and said her thoughts were with “those who are caught up in these dreadful events.” May’s office said she would chair a meeting of the government’s COBRA emergency committee today (Sunday).

Streets around London Bridge and Borough Market, fashionable districts packed with bars and restaurants, are usually busy with people on a Saturday night out. BBC showed visuals of dozens of people, evidently caught up in the attack, being escorted through a police cordon with their hands on their heads.

The attacks come days ahead of 8 June general election and less than two weeks after a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a pop concert by US singer Ariana Grande in Manchester in northern England.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first world leaders to condemn the attack. “Attacks in London are shocking & anguishing. We condemn them. My thoughts are with families of the deceased & prayers with the injured,” he said in a tweet.

U S President Donald Trump also took to Twitter to offer US help to Britain, while French President Emmanuel Macron said that "France is standing more than ever side by side with the UK".
