French President Emmanuel Macron fulfilled his poll promise as the ban on mobile phones in the country’s schools kicked in at the beginning of a new academic year, Livemint has reported. Under-the-table texting had been a big menace in French schools before the ban came into place.

The ban applies to mobiles, tablets and smartwatches in French primary and junior high schools. High schools may also implement the ban partially or fully, but it is not mandatory for them. The schools have been allowed to frame their own rules to implement the ban.

Nearly 90 per cent of French kids between the age group of 12 to 17 have a mobile phone. French Education minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said, “Being open to technologies of the future doesn’t mean we have to accept all their uses,” and called it a law for the 21st century.
