Senior NCP leader and Maharashtra’s Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has promised to take action against noted Marathi theatre and arts personality Yogesh Soman for his sharp criticism of Rahul Gandhi, over the latter’s remarks against Veer Savarkar.

Rahul Gandhi had recently made disparaging comments against Savarkar after refusing to apologise for his “rape in India” remark, which prompted Soman to post a video criticising him.

In response to Rahul Gandhi refusing to apologise by stating that “his name is Rahul Gandhi and not Rahul Savarkar”, Soman said that he neither has any quality of Savarkar nor of Gandhi.

In the video Soman also condemned Rahul Gandhi’s “pappugiri” and asserted that the former Congress president is not even qualified to assume the surname Savarkar.

This led to a sharp protest from the Congress student wing the NSUI in Mumbai University, which has now culminated in Soman being sent on forced leave. Soman is currently the Director of Theatre Arts in the university.

The trouble may increase for Soman as the Home Minister too has vowed to take action against him.

Many have criticised the high handedness of the current Maharashtra government in handling this issue and have questioned Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena which until recently used to be a big supporter of Savarkar.
