Maharashtra today (22 May) witnessed its largest ever single day Covid-19 spike with the total cases rising by 2,940 in a single day. The total Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra as a result stand at 44.582.

As per reports, Maharastra has seen a single day spike of over 2,000 cases for six consecutive days now. The death toll in the state currently stands at 1,517.

Out of the 44,582 cases, 30,474 are active and 12,583 have been discharged post recovery.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had earlier launched a ''Maharashtra bachao'' agitation sporting black bands, carrying banners and posters criticising the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) of failure to handle the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The hospitals are full, there are no ambulances available, there is no food in quarantine centres, private hospitals are charging exorbitant amounts due to which the common people are unable to afford Covid-19 treatment. But the government has done nothing despite the seriousness of the crisis”, former chief minister Devendra Fadnavis was quoted as saying.
