Maharashtra: Thackeray Government To Withdraw Cases Filed Against Environmentalists During Aarey Protests

The newly sworn-in Chief Minister (CM) of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray announced on Sunday (1 December) that his government will withdraw all the cases filed against environmentalists during the agitations against cutting of trees for the construction of a metro rail car shed in Mumbai's Aarey milk colony, reports Asian News International (ANI).
The Maharashtra CM said that cases filed against the environmentalists will be taken back. “There will be no more cases against anyone now,” Thackeray added.
The decision comes after CM Thackeray announced on Friday (29 November) that his government had passed an order to stop all the work towards construction of the car shed for Mumbai's metro rail project.
Prior to election held in the State on 21 October, the city of Mumbai had witnessed major agitations and protest against the felling of trees under the watch of the then CM Devendra Fadnavis.
The protests which took place just days ahead of elections in the city witnessed the Shiv Sena openly coming out against the then CM Fadnavis' Government of which it was itself a part.
