The dead tiger (@RandeepHooda/Twitter)
Three tigers have been reported dead in as many days in Maharashtra.
An examination of pelvic bone will be done to ascertain the gender of the age-old dead tiger, as reported by the Indian Express.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Wildlife, Nitin Kakodkar, clarified that neither of the cases seemed to be poaching.
While one tigress was found dead in an irrigation canal of Bor Dharan (dam) on Sunday (21 March), two tigers were found dead on Tuesday (23 March), one in Pandharkawda tahsil of Yavatmal district and another in Nagalwadi range of Pench Tiger Reserve in Nagpur district.
“The tigress was found in the canal water [Bor dharan dam] and may have possibly drowned due to exhaustion. But it is also possible that the body might have been thrown in water after being found dead somewhere else. No electrocution marks have been found.”
In the case of Nagalwadi, Pench tiger reserve, the body of the tiger was found highly decomposed.
Kakodkar said that “the teeth of the tiger seem to be highly worn out, indicating that it was an old tiger and may have died of old age. Miscreants do run away with paws when they find a dead tiger. We will try to trace them on Wednesday”.
