In a major boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s clarion call for ‘Make in India’, Apple has announced that it will soon start production of its 5G-ready iPhone 12 smartphone in India in partnership with its contract manufacturing partner Foxconn, reports Economic Times.

According to the analysts, the enhanced focus on local manufacturing will further increase iPhone sales in the country. The smartphone will be manufactured at the Foxconn facility in Tamil Nadu both for the domestic as well as well as the export market.

Apple started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017 with iPhone SE, and today, it manufactures some of its most advanced iPhones in India including XR, iPhone 11, and now iPhone 12.

"With the PLI scheme, it makes sense for Apple to rapidly shift production from China to India for both domestic consumption and exports. Second motivation is to address the high cost of the device due to the duty. Right now, Apple iPhones are expensive and will selectively pass on the cost benefits to customers which will drive volumes," Neil Shah, vice president and partner at Counterpoint Research reportedly told ET.

"We are proud to be starting production of iPhone 12 in India for our local customers," Apple told IANS in a statement.

"Apple is dedicated to making the best products and services in the world to delight our customers," the company added.
